MIAMI — Shohei Ohtani made history on September 19, 2024, becoming the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. The two-way star achieved this remarkable milestone during a career-defining 6-for-6 performance, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 20-4 rout over the Miami Marlins.
Ohtani’s game was nothing short of legendary, featuring three home runs, two stolen bases, and 10 RBIs—a franchise record for the Dodgers. The 50-50 achievement came in the seventh inning, when Ohtani launched his second home run of the night.
“He's one of one,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “It couldn’t happen to a more talented, humble player. It was a win for Major League Baseball.”
Commissioner Rob Manfred also praised Ohtani’s groundbreaking accomplishment, saying, “Shohei continues to take our game to new heights.” “ his character, his drive, and his commitment to all-around excellence,”
Despite recovering from elbow surgery, Ohtani’s offensive production has been unstoppable, adding yet another chapter to one of the most extraordinary careers the sport has ever seen.
“I think we all know in here that we’re watching the greatest player to ever play the game,” Dodgers teammate Gavin Lux said.
Ohtani’s performance sets a new standard for baseball’s elite and fuels the excitement for what’s to come when he returns to the mound in 2025.
