Tyler Herro is feared to have suffered a high ankle sprain in the Miami Heat’s (4-4) road victory against the team with the worst record in the NBA, the Memphis Grizzlies (1-7).
After giving up their 12-point lead, Bam Adebayo rallied the Heat to victory, scoring 16 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter with 11 rebounds and three blocks. All the while shooting 8/15 from the field and an outstanding 14/16 from the free throw line.
“He was assertive. He was aggressive on his catches at the three-point line but also his catch and goes. Getting in the paint.” Spoelstra said on Bam’s performance.
Heat’s guard Kyle Lowry had his best game of the season when he was needed the most putting together 17 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Miami will certainly need more games like this from Lowry after the injury to Herro.
“With Tyler out, we don’t know how long that’ll be. But Kyle is going to have to be really aggressive and give us some other options to play some pick and rolls and for him to create and get in the paint and do what he does.” Spoelstra said.
Jaquez Jr. made a dagger three-pointer from the left corner with less than 20 seconds left in regulation, giving the Miami Heat (4-4) a 108-102 victory on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies (1-7). The Heat’s first-round rookie played through crunch time, putting together a stat line of 11 points, three rebounds two assists, and two steals shooting 4/5 from the field in 21 minutes.
“You got to take these steps, and I just try to keep moving forward. Take steps in the right direction, not take any steps back, and just do whatever you can to win. I just keep trying to make him (Spoelstra) trust me more. Keep making him proud, try not to mess it up.” Jaquez Jr. said.
The Miami Heat (4-4) have already been dealing with health issues to begin the 2023-24 NBA season with Caleb Martin being sidelined with a knee injury since the season opener. Miami needs to fill the void in the starting five, and they may turn to a player younger than Herro as rookie Jaime Jaquez Jr. has been having an exceptional rookie year thus far and seems to have earned the trust of coach Spoelstra.
“He made some big plays down the stretch on both ends of the court. Defensively, he was very good. He just has great instincts for the ball. He’s physical and he has some poise and savviness to him defensively. So he can play with the vets because he is an older player even though he’s a rookie.” Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said.
With the Heat’s off-season acquisition, Josh Richardson struggling to start the season, shooting about 30% from the field five games into the season, head coach Erik Spoelstra may look to Jaquez Jr. as opposed to a veteran in the starting five.
The Heat’s star guard Tyler Herro is in good spirits after the team's first win of a four-game road trip. Herro has been averaging 22.9 points, 4.6 assists, and five rebounds while shooting 44.7% from the field.
“It’s unfortunate, but I’m just going to continue to work hard. I’ve been through this injury stuff before, and I’m going to just keep working.” Herro said in the locker room postgame.
The Miami Heat (4-4) head to Atlanta on Saturday to take on the Hawks (4-3) where we get to see who coach Spoelstra decides to insert the starting rotation.
