Collectible objects often hold deep meaning and value within different groups or communities. Currently, Labubu and Sonny Angel have emerged as the collectibles of the moment, being more than just a toy. With their blind-box packaging and viral impact on social media, what is it about these figurines that has driven their rise to such massive popularity?

Both products have different origins and concepts, starting with Sonny Angels, which were designed by Toru Soeya in 2004 and are promoted by the Japanese company Dreams. The product features a little angel boy who enjoys wearing various types of headgear. Despite its long history, the figurine has undergone multiple design changes and size variations to reach its current format.

Labubu was created in Hong Kong by the artist Kasing Lung in 2015. This iconic design is mainly known for its monster-like aesthetic, but also was inspired by the nordic elf or fantasy creatures from the fairytales. In 2019, Lung signed a partnership with the Chinese toy company Pop Mart for its distribution. Since then, Labubu has been released in various colours, shapes and sizes.

Both brands have achieved great success thanks to their packaging, known as blind boxes. With these, customers don’t know the contents of the box, and the product they receive is completely random. This shopping experience has become intriguing and fun, leading users to create trends on social media to share their findings. Another reason for their popularity is the variety of themed collections they offer. Labubu provides dolls in different sizes, colors, collaborations, and even unique outfits. On the other hand, Sonny Angels vary the themes of their hats according to the seasons.

The peak of their success can be attributed to the fact that multiple  public figures started carrying them as part of their belongings. This led to increased awareness of both brands, influencing more people to buy them. Among the celebrities seen with Sonny Angels are Dua Lipa and Rosalía. On the other hand, Lisa, the solo singer and member of the group Blackpink, has been one of the greatest exponents of Labubu, showcasing her large collection on multiple occasions and expressing her love for them.

Many people have criticized the high price of these toys, arguing that they are expensive simply for following a trend. A single Sonny Angel blind box costs $11.25, while a full set of 12 is priced at $120 on the official website. Depending on the edition, a single mystery box can go up to $40. Labubu offers a wider price range, with a blind box priced at $8 and a pack of 12 figures at $135. Some of the most popular models fall between $40 and $120.

In conclusion, collectibles are more than just a passing trend. Despite their high prices, their appeal is driven by their unique and charming designs, the influence of public figures, and the excitement of the blind-box experience. For many, owning these figurines is a way to stay current, connect with a like-minded community, or simply enjoy the joy of collecting.
